Nepal🇳🇵

Ruksha, 25

Born in Kathmandu, Nepal

Came to Australia in July 2014

How did we meet?

Ruksha was a colleague of mine back when I worked at NAB in Servicing.

What is your occupation?

I work at Dyson as a Customer Service Consultant helping with the live chat interface. I also studied a Bachelor of Accounting at Charles Darwin University and am currently studying the free TAFE courses, including Team Leader and Executive Assistant courses.

Why did you come to Australia?

The main reason was to pursue my career and further my education by studying at university. Most of my relatives were already based in Australia, so this is a major reason why I chose here.

Australia is one of the most popular countries to emigrate to for Nepalese people.

What do you like about Sydney?

I love Sydney’s beaches, especially Manly and Bondi. Nepal is landlocked so we don’t have access to the sea!

The people here are very friendly. I like how people strike up conversations with complete strangers, that’s nice to see.

The climate here is very nice and actually is quite comparable to Kathmandu, where the summers are sweltering and the winters are mild.

The coffee culture is great in Sydney, we have many excellent cafes. I also like how we have many strict rules and regulations; it's very safe for women here compared to back in Nepal, where the rules are very loosely enforced.

What don’t you like about Sydney?

It’s really busy and crowded. Since moving here, my life has become so scheduled and hectic that I don’t have much time for family. I always have something on, whether it’s university classes, work or something else.

University fees here for international students are ridiculous. It doesn't have to be the same as local students, but it'd be nice if it were a bit more affordable.

I also dislike how public transport is always delayed!

What would you like to say to Sydneysiders?

Please love and respect everyone irrespective of people’s differences like race, religion, gender etc.

Please visit my country Nepal if you get the chance to!

What languages do you speak?

English, Nepalese (native)

Teach us one word/phrase from your native language.

नयाँ बर्षको शुभकामना

Naya barsha ko subhakamana: Happy New Year.

I chose this phrase because every new year is like a new beginning in life.

What is one thing you want us to know about your native country?

In Nepal, we have 125 castes in our country and each of them has its own culture and traditions.

One of these traditions is Kumari, the worshipping of young prepubescent girls who are regarded as the embodiment of supreme female deities. Some Hindus, like myself, worship them.

Nepal is also a really beautiful country and one of the best places for nature-lovers, we’ve got mountains, lakes, rivers etc. There are so many temples that you can visit.

Who is the most famous person in your native country?

Rabi Lamichhane- a journalist and TV host

Since there’s a lot of corruption going on in Nepal, he provides real facts and figures and is well-known for his “detective-style” journalism.

He has the record for hosting the longest-ever television talk show Sidha kura janta sanga, it was more than 62 hours. He works for the welfare of the people instead of helping the politicians.

What is the best dish in your native country?

Momos, Nepalese dumplings.

Different types of meats can be used, such as pork, chicken, buffalo and goat can be used. Buff momo, the one with buffalo meat, is the most famous one and can be found everywhere in Nepal.

My personal favourite is with chicken and pork.
